English 9 is designed to strengthen students’ academic literacy—the skills of reading, writing, and reflection that are essential to success in high school. Participating in the course’s literate community and sharing ideas and work with others helps students develop both expressive and collaborative skills. Students explore themes of connection, leadership, innocence, and justice. Students will read works by mostly classic authors that may include Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Golding’s Lord of the Flies, Shakespeare’s Othello, as well as a selection of poems and short essays from New England writers and works by other contemporary authors. Students write argumentative responses, poetry, and shorter reflective pieces.
