Ceramics: Hand Building and Wheel Throwing

Arts | Visual Arts
Grade: 9-12
Credits: 1

This course introduces students to working in three dimensions through the medium of clay. Students will learn hand building and wheel throwing techniques in creating both functional and sculptural pieces, including coil, slab, pinch, and working on the wheel. Surface carving and decoration will also be explored, as well
as texture and color through the use of ceramic glaze. Over-arching questions threading through the course are: “Where does the balance exist between form and function in the creation of ceramic art?” and “What is the role of craftsmanship in ceramics?”.
