One of Thetford Academy’s largest and finest traditions, the annual Woods Trail Run gathers the best of New England’s junior high and high school runners to race in TA’s beautiful mountain setting. Each year, thousands of students come to Thetford to compete on the best cross country trail in New England, a challenging 5K course through the woods and hills of Thetford.
TA’s cross country trail was the inspiration of Dan Grossman, a longtime Thetford resident and volunteer for Thetford Academy. In 1991, he recruited John Morton of Morton Trails to design the trail for the school. Building the Woods Trail was a community effort, involving hundreds of volunteers, that was spearheaded by Dan and his wife, Dana; John Morton; Bob Fisken; and Tom Ozahowski. In 2010, in recognition of Dan’s vision and of the 13 years he spent as meet director of the Woods Trail Run and other big meets hosted by TA, the course was named the Dan Grossman Woods Trail.
The 26th Annual Woods Trail Run took place on October 1, 2016. Photos from the race can be found here, courtesy of Dan Grossman, who also volunteers his time and talents as the photographer for many of TA’s annual events.
The 2017 Woods Trail Run will take place on Saturday, October 7, 2017. Mark your calendars now!
