Life in Thetford, Vermont
Thetford is a small town in central Vermont. We are fortunate to be located ten miles from Hanover, New Hampshire, home to Dartmouth College. Dartmouth College is a renowned Ivy League university with a broad undergraduate program and strong graduate schools, specifically in business, medicine and engineering. Many Thetford residents work or teach at Dartmouth.
Vermont is well known as a safe place to live. Our small-town life and rural environment offer an experience of the United States that is traditional and quiet. However, we are also very close to major metropolitan areas, making it easy to visit the great museums and other cultural sites of American life. During the year we will travel to Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C. along with other shorter trips to take advantage of a varied cultural life in New England.
We also take short trips for hiking, kayaking, biking, shopping, community meals, theatre and music and sports. Students have a chance to experience some of the special traditions of our area, too, such as agricultural and craft fairs, holiday parades, and other local celebrations of rural life.
Vermont is blessed with four distinct seasons: a beautiful summer of warm days and cool nights; magnificent fall foliage that draws tourists from around the world; a cold and snowy winter that we embrace with a love of skiing, skating, snow shoeing and gatherings around the fireplace, and a rainy spring with glimpses of green grass and flowers after "sugaring" time when Vermonters make their world-famous syrup from the sap of maple trees.
School life....and more
Our school day starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 2:15 p.m. including lunch on campus. Breakfast is also available before school starts. Students take four courses each semester. The first semester runs from late August to mid-January. Second semester is January through mid-June.
Class sizes are small on average 15 students which allows extensive personal attention from teachers. Students usually have five and a half hours of class daily, Monday through Friday. In addition, they have about two hours of homework daily.
Every week on Wednesdays, there is Academic Support time after school, when all teachers are available in their classrooms to offer extra help to students. The school library and central computer lab are also open daily for two hours after school and many students find this a pleasant place to do schoolwork or use technology resources.
Thetford, Vermont is across the Connecticut River from Hanover, New Hampshire. The entire area is called the Upper Valley, referring to the upper Connecticut River Valley. The Academy has a beautiful 250 acre hilltop campus overlooking the river, with extensive woodland trails around the school and fine athletic fields. The surrounding area has developed a vibrant cultural and civic life, with many opportunities for cultural, social, academic, and athletic activity.
