In 2014, with support from the Woodbury Foundation, Thetford Academy launched its Environmental Science and Outdoor Education Initiative. This initiative builds on TA’s commitment to experiential and outdoor learning, and takes advantage of our expansive natural resources. Faculty are taking their classrooms outdoors, and engaging students in a wide variety of hands-on learning opportunities that complement traditional classroom studies.
The Environmental Science and Outdoor Education Initiative includes several elective courses across TA’s curriculum, including Forestry, Botany, Why Food Matters, Environmental Economics, Nature Writing, and outdoor units have been integrated in many more. In 2016-2017, TA will launch a new half-day Outdoor Leadership course to teach outdoor skills like orienteering, constructing shelters, fire-building, wilderness survival, and first aid. New extracurricular activities, like the Outdoor Club and the Nordic Ski Club, engage a diverse group of students interested in outdoor experiences.
