Most sports are available on a Varsity, Junior Varsity,
and Junior High level, with eligibility as determined by Vermont Principals'
Association Regulations. Sports attract both widespread community support
and strong student commitment, with about two-thirds of the student population
participating in athletics during at least one season. Although learning
is the primary goal of the athletic program, teams also achieve a high
standard of competitive success, as indicated in Division III State Championships
won in 1997-98 in Girls Cross Country and Softball, and Runner-Up in Girls
Soccer. In 1996-97, Championships included Girls Cross Country and Boys
Soccer. |

| Special Honors ..... In addition, three Thetford Academy students in the past six years have been named as recipients of the Scholar Athlete Award from the Vermont State Athletic Directors' Association: Andrew J. Ferriter (1997), Jolene Thurston (1996), and Emily Grossman (1994). Eight students in the state--a male and a female recipient from each of four regions--are selected for this honor annually, recognizing academic, athletic, and community accomplishments. ..... For the beginning of the 1997-98 school year, the Thetford Academy Athletic Team Agreement was reviewed and revised by a committee of coaches, teachers, and student-athletes. It includes the following GOAL STATEMENT "Participation in the Thetford Academy athletic programs is a privilege. Students participating in these programs will develop their athletic skills while focusing on sportsmanship, dedication, and commitment to their team and school. Team members will be respectful, and seek to represent Thetford Academy in a positive manner." (The full text of the Team Agreement appears in the Student Handbook on pages 13-16.) Every student-athlete and his or her parent/guardian must sign this agreement each season of participation.
