Admission

2008 Graduation
In keeping with its mission as a community school, Thetford Academy maintains an open admission philosophy, seeking to admit a wide range of students from the local area. The primary qualification is interest in joining a school community guided by our principles.

Public School District Enrollments

There is some variation by town of residence, explained below. In all cases, legal residence in the towns listed will entitle the student to full town school district support: that is, annual payment of tuition costs to Thetford Academy until the student earns a diploma.

The Academy maintains contracts called Partnership Agreements with three towns: Thetford, Vermont; Strafford, Vermont; and Lyme, New Hampshire. Students from these towns are guaranteed admission upon submitting the Intent to Enroll form as follows:

  • Thetford, VT: guaranteed admission in all grades, 7-12.
  • Strafford, VT: guaranteed admission in high school grades, 9-12.
  • Lyme, NH: guaranteed admission in high school grades, 9-12, as long as Thetford Academy is the first choice they make. A student who has lived in Lyme and attended a different high school must submit an application.

Other towns provide open choice for families, who may select any local high school including the Academy.

Students from the following towns are admitted by application on a space-available basis:

  • Waits River District (Corinth & Topsham, VT)
  • Tunbridge, VT
  • Hartland, VT
  • Sharon, VT

Family Enrollments

The Academy also admits students whose families choose our school as an alternative to their local high school and wish to pay tuition. These "private tuition" students must submit an application.

In addition, the school welcomes international students participating in one-semester or one-year study programs, such as American Field Service (AFS) and Youth for Understanding (YFU), when local host families choose to sponsor them. Each year, the Academy admits up to three international students for a one-year stay at no charge. These guest students need to have English proficiency, as we cannot provide them with English as a Second Language (ESL) services.
